Course Introduction & Navigation Directions

Session 1:

  • Recognize that driver safety affects everyone
  • Recognize that every behavior is a choice
  • Define risky driving behaviors
  • Identify the Six Deadly Choices that lead to the majority of crashes
  • Identify what’s in your control when you drive
  • Explain how to drive defensively in conditions beyond your control

Session 2:

  • Define defensive driving, collision prevention and the National Safety Council (NSC) Collision Prevention formula
  • Identify defensive driving techniques that can be used when physical, mental and emotional factors affect the ability to drive
  • Recognize potential hazards when driving and use the "What-If" strategy to avoid hazards
  • Identify the risks associated with driving without seat belts or proper restraints
  • Identify how to properly use vehicle safety systems

Session 3:

  • Recognize the risks associated with improper speed
  • Recognize the risks associated with following too closely
  • Employ the Three-Second and Three-Second-Plus following distance rules when driving
  • Define aggressive driving and road rage
  • Identify different driving distractions
  • Recognize the risks associated with distracted driving
  • Choose safe, responsible and respectful driving behaviors to avoid aggressive and distracted driving

Session 4:

  • Identify the risks associated with substance impairment
  • Identify the risks associated with drowsy driving
  • Choose safe, responsible and respectful behaviors to avoid driving impaired or drowsy
  • Identify standard road sign colors and shapes
  • Explain the proper procedure for navigating multi-lane roads

Session 5:

  • Identify the risks associated with turning improperly
  • Explain the proper procedures for passing and overtaking
  • Identify the risks associated with driving left-of-center
  • Describe right of way violations and methods used to control traffic at intersections
  • Identify the risks associated with roadway maintenance and construction
  • Use techniques for handling trains and railway grade crossings

Session 6:

  • Identify other vehicles you will encounter on the road and explain techniques for dealing with them
  • Recognize the challenges drivers of larger vehicles face when driving and explain how to safely and effectively share the road with them
  • Explain proper techniques for dealing with vulnerable road users which include: pedestrians, pedal cyclists and animals

Session 7:

  • Describe the three stages of a collision
  • Identify the steps to conduct pre-trip inspections
  • Explain the importance of proper vehicle maintenance
  • Describe steps for addressing different types of immediate danger that may be encountered when driving

Session 8:

  • The 10 Habits Of Defensive Driving
  • The Six Deadly Choices
  • The importance of choosing the right behaviors
